Synopsis
Ichi is a blind goze, a traveling female musician, wandering through Japan during the turbulent final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. Beneath her quiet exterior she is also a lethal swordswoman, carrying a hidden blade and surviving through instinct, discipline and extraordinary hearing. Her journey repeatedly brings her into contact with ronin, political extremists and ordinary people caught in the violence of the Bakumatsu era, forcing her to decide when to remain detached and when to draw her sword.
ICHI reimagines the Zatoichi tradition through a female protagonist and places her in the political instability of the Bakumatsu period. The manga combines jidaigeki sword action with a quieter character study of a woman who has learned to survive without depending on sight, status or protection. Ichi's encounters with young warriors and historical figures gradually connect her personal journey to the upheaval that will lead toward the Meiji Restoration.
