Synopsis
Kaih Morisawa and Tatsuki Sato are first-year high-school students and close childhood friends. One day, the motorcycle Tatsuki is driving crashes into a truck, killing Kaih instantly. When Kaih regains consciousness, he discovers that his mind has entered the body of Marika, a girl who was already hospitalized. Forced to live as someone else while his own life has ended, Kaih struggles with identity, friendship and feelings he never had to confront before. The situation becomes even more complicated when Marika's own consciousness begins to return, leaving two souls sharing one body and pulling Tatsuki, Marika's stepbrother Shun and the people around them into an increasingly painful emotional knot.
Return is a 1990s shoujo supernatural drama that uses body-sharing and gender displacement to turn an ordinary childhood friendship into a much harder question about identity and love. Its most distinctive element is that Kaih is not merely disguised or transformed: he is dead, inhabiting someone else's body, and eventually forced to coexist with Marika's returning consciousness. That makes the romance inseparable from grief, selfhood and the fear of disappearing entirely.
