Kodo, prince of the blue-blood nation, is the only person capable of building the giant machines known as Haguruma. He originally develops them to help rebuild his country, but during the war against the red-blood people his inventions are turned into devastating weapons. After witnessing red-blood civilians being hunted and enslaved, Kodo is overwhelmed by guilt. He rescues refugees, refuses to construct any more Haguruma for the kingdom and is condemned by his own father. Forced to flee, the young prince begins a dangerous journey through a world divided by blood, war and the machinery he created.
Seiketsu no Haguruma is a mechanical fantasy war manga built around the moral consequences of invention. Kodo is both privileged prince and responsible engineer: his machines save his people militarily but also make large-scale persecution possible. The series uses the blue-blood/red-blood divide to explore prejudice, inherited conflict and whether technology can remain morally neutral once it becomes a weapon.
