Synopsis
Takamaru Mai has suffered since childhood from disturbing dreams filled with blood, snakes and a bottomless darkness. After a traffic accident leaves her with only minor physical injuries, an X-ray reveals something impossible: the shape of a hand gripping her skull. Mai begins to realize that the visions haunting her are tied to a spiritual burden she inherited before birth. As her mother Ayame and the people around her become caught in the same chain of suffering, Mai's path eventually leads toward Izuko, guardian of the Gate of Grudges, and the truth behind the ancestral soul whose karma has attached itself to her family.
Skyhigh Karma is a two-volume side story in Tsutomu Takahashi's Skyhigh universe, but unlike the episodic structure of the original series it follows one central family curse from beginning to end. The manga is strongest when it treats karma as something inherited through relationships rather than as an abstract supernatural rule. Mai's fear, Ayame's guilt and the lingering spirit of Kato Imaru gradually turn a ghost story into a bleak family tragedy about whether compassion can interrupt a cycle of suffering.
